YEAR

2015

I said to a man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’

And he replied:

‘Go out into the darkness and put your into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known say.’

FRUITFUL BENEDICTIONS IN 2014

“Gratitude is the best attitude”- Anonymous

It is the last day of a very long amazing journey into 2014. This time calls for looking back on the last 12 months. At some point, we need to do thorough self- assessments. We ought to review the lows and downs of 2014. It is that very moment we are recapping on everything that happen during the year. As an aspirant journalist, I more or less focused on world stories which I find important to know but maybe for a minute I probably need to question myself about my story, about my ups and downs, my highs and lows and significantly, the bad and the good I have experiences during 2014.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

I planted a seed early this year and what are the results? In my own walk and journey, what are my 2014 outcomes? What are my accomplishments and my down falls?

I have cried, laughed, smiled, frowned, ran, fell, crawled, tumbled, jumped, whatever the case may be, at the end….I stood up, dusted myself off and looked forward to the next. I am grateful to my WONDERFUL GOD for both the little and the majestic that I have accomplished. I would have NOT managed without God!

Some of the things I have achieved this year include:

  • First and foremost, completing my Bachelor of Arts (B.A) Degree in Communication Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA) which I started studying towards in 2011 midyear and successfully got to the finish line this December.
  • Receiving a total of five (5) distinctions on my last seven (7) subjects/ modules is my immense blessing. These +75 percentage subjects include Communication research which it toke me approximately two months working on, day in and out; Media studies: Institutions, Theory and Issues; New media Technology; International Communication and lastly Development Studies. Without hard word, dedication and academic consistency, it would be seemingly impossible.
  • Being waiting too long for this one for a while now. Although my driving skills have not reached ‘excellence’, learning how to drive is a definite goal for me this year. 🙂
  • Being around and with a big warm loving family and all ‘the sisters and brothers from other mothers’ I have made at varsity and other various places has been life changing. Engaging with them has been fruitful.

Not only has the good happen. I also encountered the bad too. Some of the worst I have experienced God erased them from my sight so that I may no longer can spot them. A great God He is. I have had my downs but I have not dwell too much on but I sure think I have learned a lot through them.

  • Most probably not getting my driving license is my 2014 lows 😦

That is my 2014 story. Welcoming a new year with faith and hope, I bid farewell to 2014!

PICTURES THAT TOLD A STORY IN 2014

Lets recap the year 2014. The hip and happening, or rather, ‘The have happened’. The tragic, unjust, and wicked happened during 2014. Not only the bad has happened but the good, true and tremendous have happened. These are some of the world incidences or spoke about stories that I recall of this year. Definitely will I never remember all but the least I do, are a part of my list.

Boko Haram, officially called Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'Awat Wal-Jihad (People Committed to the Prophet's Teaching s for Propagation Jihad) is a militant Islamist movement in North-East Nigeria designated by the US as a terrorist organisation in November 2013 and has killed more than 5000 civilians between July 2009-June 2014, including at least 2000 in the first half of 2014.

BEING A PART OF AN UPRIGHT COURSE

We may be distances far apart and even more be strangers to each other but how often do we take a stand for what is right than who we know?

“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creatures, let me do it now”- Anonymous

I am a giver, a volunteer. I love making use of the time I have to do good for others. I love standing in the gap for others. Yesterday I too, toke a stand with millions who were campaigning together in support of the three Al Jazeera journalists, Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed who were unscrupulously jailed over a year in Egypt for doing their job: reporting news.

dbYeiJgn_400x400

I toke a stand through taking two pictures of me holding a poster written #FreeAJStaff and the other written ‘JOURNALISM IS NOT A CRIME’. I do not know these journalists but doing good for another does not necessarily require that. Or does it? I am more than delighted to be a part of this campaign. Its a benediction. How fantastic it was to come together in one accord as a global voice and with the same aim which brought us talking about the same thing. Engaging on Twitter was also a great moment of seeing people’s love, support and kindness as they tweet and re-tweet posts, reflecting what they believed to be correct. Oh Yes, I was part of this caucus and from now on…I think I am a better person than the day before. I enjoyed being a part of this good course. It was worth it 🙂

THE WORLD IS WRONG ABOUT…..

It is either the world is ignorant or it is losing sight of priorities.

This is the age of ‘80:20- Extreme poverty, Gracious Luxury’ as John Dornan and Colm Regan have coined/ termed it in Development in an Unequal World (6th Edition). We are in a world that compromises needs over wants, priorities over the less important, the immediate over the non immediate, the essential over the least. I intend not to talk about the current state of development. I just generally think the world has never always been correct in everything.

Statistics show that regional distribution of the 884 million people not using unimproved sources for drinking water include:

North Africa at 13 million;

Commonwealth of Independent States at 17 million;

Western Asia at 21 million

Latin American and Caribbean at 38 million;

South-Western Asia at 83 million;

Eastern Asia at 151 million;

Southern Asia at 220 million and

Sub Saharan Africa 330 million

The need for water around the would outweighs and surpasses that of free WiFi. So is the reality but free WiFi is easily accessible than water????

A very wise man once said, ‘Those of us who have been thirsty, truly thirsty, struggle to empathise with those whom real thirst is a daily torment. Nor do those of us who have had to carry heavy containers of water, day in and day out for long distances over rough terrain, really understand the real value of having water- safe water on taps.’

Simply meaning, we often do not comprehend dire situations if not exposed to them or simply because we have no first hand experience of these situations. Until then, we see value of such needs and therefore choose to or not to prioritise on.

I belief Internet is of vital importance in society, also liberating the bigger and broader picture of how best or better we can ameliorate such societal circumstances. From the improvement of literacy, growing a bigger information society, to eradicate poverty, create sustainable development, and to solve problems, just to mention a few, can be possible through the use of internet and more importantly ‘free WiFi’. In one way or the other, these are to benefit and most significantly impact certain communities in vast ways. However, the impacts can have some sort of limitation too, mainly because some needs are immediate than the others. This is prevalent when comparing basic needs such as water which is associated with every mankind’s right and the availability of free WiFi, which in many state are not necessarily an immediate basic need.

If free WiFi is easily accessible, why is it hard for people to access free water, free food, free education, and free quality health services? These are alongside the most “cannot live without”, “urgent” needs of a large segment of humanity.

The world is wrong due to the fact that water is immediate/urgent therefore “cannot wait and should not wait” and Free WiFi can wait.
